How do I apply to be a tutor on Course Hero?

In this overview, we will provide you with instructions on how to apply to become a tutor on Course Hero. By following these steps, you will ensure that your tutor application is received and processed quickly.

 

Before starting your tutor application, you should know that:

  • You may only submit one application to become a tutor, and you are only allowed one tutor account.
  • You can only use the tutor account associated with your tutor application.
  • There are two (2) parts to the tutor application process. 
    • Part 1 consists of preparing the required documents, creating your Course Hero account and starting your application, selecting your subjects, and uploading your proof of education (Steps 1-4 below). 
    • Part 2 consists of completing your ID verification via Persona (Step 5 below).
  • Course Hero will never use or share your information for any other purpose without your consent.
  • If approved, you must uphold Course Hero's Honor Code, Academic Integrity and Copyright Policies, and Terms of Use at all times.
  • Currently, we are only accepting tutor applications from individuals in India and the Philippines.
  • Currently, we are only accepting applicants that fall into one of the below categories:
    • Current college, university, and undergraduate students who have completed at least two full years of coursework
    • Current Master’s and graduate level students
    • Professionals who have received a college, university, or undergraduate degree or above (e.g. Master’s, PhD)

 

Part I

Step 1: Get two important documents ready to upload

There are two important documents you must submit during the application process, and it’s helpful to get these ready before starting your application. These documents will help us confirm your identity and ensure you are ready to become a tutor on Course Hero. When submitting your documents, please make sure they are NOT password protected; otherwise, we won't be able to review them, and your application will be rejected.

 

Document 1 - Photo Identification Card (Photo ID)

Course Hero strives to provide a high integrity platform where tutors can safely and securely share their knowledge and expertise. With this goal in mind, we require all tutor applicants to perform an ID verification check via Persona, a third-party ID verification service provider. To complete ID verification via Persona, you must submit a real-time photo (not an uploaded image) of your government-issued photo ID card.

 

Your photo ID card must: Your photo ID card can't:
  • Be issued by your government (driver's license, etc.), but cannot be a passport
  • Be fully visible (including all edges/borders of the ID) and easy to read
  • Show a clear picture of your whole face
  • Show your full name
  • Show the same name you entered in your application (note that if your ID does not contain a last name, you will enter * in the Last Name field on your application)
  • Be up-to-date
  • Be a physical card - it cannot be an image of a card on a screen
  • If it is printed on paper, all borders/edges must be visible and the ID should be cut out from the paper for best results
  • Be expired
  • Be blurry, dark, or hard to read
  • Be a passport
  • Be a student, college, or university identification card
  • Be covered in any way that prevents us from reading all of the information
  • Be an electronic/digital replica of the government ID (it must be the ID itself)
  • Show a different name than the one entered in your application

Document 2 - Proof of Education

At Course Hero, we are committed to helping students excel academically, and when you become a tutor on Course Hero, you play an important role in that commitment. That is why it is critical that we ensure you have the expertise and qualifications to provide original, accurate, and detailed answers to student questions.

 

Every tutor applicant must also upload proof of their education. A list of acceptable documents and requirements for your proof of education can be found below.

 

Acceptable documents for your proof of education include:

  • Official college or university transcript of records or mark sheet showing individual grades for each course (strongly preferred) through at least the end of the 2nd year college level
  • Official college or university grade report, grade memo, grade sheet, or credit sheet showing grades for each course
  • Official college or university online transcript showing grades for each course (must show full web address and full name)

 

Your proof of education must: Your proof of education can’t:
  • Be one of the documents listed above in the “Acceptable documents” section
  • Show individual grades for each course you have completed, through at least the end of the 2nd year college level
  • Show full course names
  • Include all relevant pages
  • Show your full name
  • Be fully visible and easy to read
  • Be an official document issued by your college or university
  • Be a certificate, license, diploma, or any other document that does not include a record of grades/marks
  • Be blurry, dark, or hard to read
  • Be cropped or covered in any way the prevents us from reading all of the information
  • Be a document that’s not listed above in the “Acceptable documents” section
 

Tips for Philippine applicants 🇵🇭

  • Uploading your official transcript of records showing individual grades for each course is strongly recommended.

Tips for Indian applicants 🇮🇳

  • Uploading your official mark sheet showing individual grades for each course is strongly recommended.

 

If you are a current college or university student, you must still upload one of the documents listed above in the acceptable documents section and it must show individual grades for all of the courses you have completed so far.

 

If you have completed multiple degrees, please upload a transcript of records or mark sheet for each of the degrees you have completed (or are in the process of completing). You can combine them into a single PDF using this tool and upload them as a single document.

 

If the last name on your Proof of Education and the last name on your Photo Identification Card (Photo ID) don't match, please upload a merged PDF that contains both your Proof of Education and your marriage certificate. You can combine them into a single PDF using this tool and upload them as a single document.

 

Step 2: Create a free tutor account and start your application

Once you have prepared your important documents, the next step is to create a free Course Hero account. You must first create a Course Hero account before starting your tutor application. If your application is approved, you will use this account to access Course Hero as a tutor.

 

To create your Course Hero account, go to our tutor page using this link and click the pink Apply Now button. You will be asked to enter your email address and create a username and password for your account. When ready, click on the "Sign up as a Tutor" button.

Next, you will be asked to enter your basic information. As you complete this part of the tutor application, please make sure to:

  • Enter your full first and last name exactly as it appears on your photo ID card. Using initials or nicknames will result in your application being denied.
  • Use the same email address as the one you used to create your Course Hero account.
  • Enter your full mobile phone number and avoid using a VoIP phone number.

Before you can continue with your application, you will also be required to enter the phone number you plan to use for your tutor account. This phone number must match the phone number you plan to complete your identity verification with and the phone number you plan to use to make future earnings withdrawals. This is an important step to help protect your tutor account and earnings.

 

Step 3: Select tutoring subjects

When you apply to become a tutor, it's exciting to be able to select subjects that you're passionate about, share that passion with students, and earn money while doing so. However, selecting the subjects in which you want to tutor is an important decision that can have a significant impact on your success as a tutor on Course Hero.

You may select up to five (5) subjects. However, you should only select subjects in which you have demonstrated expertise based on your academic records.Please keep in mind that some subjects may be unavailable for selection because we are not currently accepting new tutor applicants for these subjects. Lastly, you may be required to take a short quiz to assess your expertise in a given subject.

 

If you are approved in some subjects and not approved in others, you will still be able to answer questions in the subjects in which you are approved.

 

Step 4: Upload documents and submit your application

After selecting your subjects and completing any required quizzes, you will be prompted to upload the proof of education document mentioned in Step 1. When uploading this document, please be sure you have carefully followed the document guidelines in Step 1, as this will allow us to process your application more quickly.

 

You are now done with Part I of the tutor application process!

Part II

Step 5: Complete your identity verification through Persona

Part 2 of the tutor application process will require you to verify your identity via Persona.

 

After completing Step 4, you will receive an email confirming that your application has been submitted. This email will also contain a link and instructions to complete an ID verification check via Persona. During this ID verification process, you will be asked to submit a real-time photo of your government-issued ID and a real-time selfie. Once you submit your identity verification via Persona, please allow up to five business days for your completed application to be reviewed.

The information you provide in your tutor application will be used to determine if you qualify as a tutor on Course Hero and as otherwise stated on our application form. Your information will never be used for any other purpose and will not be shared or made public without your consent.

 

Please note that only one tutor application is allowed per person and only one tutor account is allowed per person. Additionally, you can only use the Course Hero tutor account that is associated with your personal tutor application.

 

If you qualify and are approved as a tutor, you will act as an independent contractor and not an employee or agent of Course Hero. Given that our tutor community is dedicated to learning and teaching, and we require all tutors to uphold Course Hero’s Honor Code, Academic Integrity Policy, Copyright Policy, and Terms of Use at all times. Failure or refusal to uphold these policies at all times may result in permanent termination of your Course Hero tutor account and a ban on tutoring on Course Hero in the future.
